The Library

Every two weeks , I would be visiting the local library …….one of my favorite place when I need to get out of the house . Its just great to be surrounded by books and I don’t have to spent money .

I’m not surprised if there are folks out there who have not been to the library for years . Perhaps they might have thought that it don’t have anything interesting for their kids and for themselves . As for me this place was one of the first places I seeked out when I moved to this town .

When I assumed the post as a kindergarten principal , it was just natural that excursions should include a trip to the library . My main aim was to introduce the children to the library as well as to encourage them to come more often . Apart from that we were encouraging the children to get a library card and stressing to them how their behaviors should be while in the library . Besides that its free to go here .

In fact the library organizers appreciated such trips from schools as they hope that visiting the library will encourage children to enjoy reading. Perhaps the public library should make it as their goal for every kindergarten in the town to visit the library . As our kindergarten were regular visitors to the local public library we hoped to create a kind of partnership with them .As for the librarians it was a challenge for them to make the library an exciting place .

Again for any school trip safety is top priority . Parents have a right to ask for assurance that precautions have been taken . They would call as to how does the school plan to ensure their children’s safety during the outing . They questioned as to how many adults would be supervising . Its just appropriate that parents asked about the details . They will not give their permissions for their child to go if they have any concerns . However help from parents to reinforce behaviour expectations was very much appreciated .

Again another head count . The need to remind proper library conduct .

Being a parent myself and as a principal too , I would try to ease parents anxiety by writing a letter to parents …informing them of the trip as well as assuring them that precautions have been taken . Rather lengthy …..but it touched on the educational value of the trip , the number of teachers and adults ( normally parents ) accompanying and supervising the children and the number of buses to be used to ferry these children .

Its quite a task getting on the bus .
Lots of gross motor skills being used here .
How to behave while in a bus was practised and reinforced .

Its good for the parents to ask ….as schools and parents must work together to make sure school trips never end in tragedy .

Normally children are barred from going to the upper floor of the library .
As its a tour of the library , we had to ensure all the children did not run up the staircase . Everybody behaved and had listened to orders .

Going down the stairs
Its a kind of a challenge for the librarians to fit in the tour .

In addition to printed materials , computers are also available to the public .

How To Take Care Of A Book .

At the end of the tour , the children sang and danced with the librarians .

Explain that libraries are places of learning . Loud behavior isn't acceptable .

Story time .

How I wished the librarian had chosen a bigger book with plenty of illustrations .

Glad that the children enjoyed reading .

To read is a literacy skill . I'm impressed ....said this librarian .

On weekends the local public library would be quite packed . I noticed that parents are dropping off children unattended . Its just not right to do so ...as the library is a public facility . Parents are responsible for their child's conduct and safety while they are in the library . Don't you think so ?
